You need to have every meticulous detail in place. Most importantly, you need to pay special attention to aesthetics, timing, and the way you present yourself – otherwise, things could go terribly wrong. And we've all seen those videos where the potential bride-to-be says "no". Ouch, right? Follow these guidelines to get a "yes" from your clients and avoid the dejection that comes with a failed proposal.

Ensure comprehension.
Make sure the customer understands exactly what the proposal is laying out. Go over the scope, schedule, and payment plan in great detail, giving reasons as to why they've been designed that way. Reducing ambiguity right from the get-go will make it more likely that the client will feel comfortable with the plan, and by taking a moment to explain everything thoroughly, you're building a better, more trusting relationship with the customer.

Don't rush it.
This is a highly important and sensitive matter – chances are, your client is paying thousands of dollars for your professional services. When it comes to the proposal, take your time. Speak slowly, give ample attention to each piece of the plan, and allow them to ask as many questions as they like. Moving too quickly or putting too much pressure on the client might keep them from trusting you enough to move forward with the project.

Be friendly.
People aren't going to buy from someone they don't like. Sure, it's not a bad idea to be assertive when conducting business, but there's a fine line between being firm and being too pushy. Put on your best smile. Make conversation, and remember to be kind and compassionate. Make them laugh, if you're good at that kind of thing. Consider their needs.
A little empathy goes a long way. Think about the customer's specific needs and requirements and make certain that they're included in the proposal. By anticipating their requests ahead of time, you're demonstrating that you understand and appreciate the things that are most important to them.

Make it presentable.
Last – but certainly not least – you'll want to make your proposal look professional and well thought-out. A typed, colorful proposal with proper spacing and outlined sections will be much more appealing to the client than something that looks like it was drawn up in five minutes.
